Case Study: Average Uptime in 2020

2020 has ended.

Hosting Advisor has researched 18 Indonesian hosting providers so far, for more than 17 months since August 2018. What did we find that is worth it to share with you?

We have shared almost everything with you in this article.

But this time is different, because we share a case study with you. About facts related to uptime, throughout 2020. And to start with, based on our uptime monitoring data during 2020,the facts are:

The average website is offline or inaccessible for 2 hours and 30 minutes per month or 30 hours a year, due to a down hosting server.

The average uptime from 18 hosting providers is 99.63%.

A score that is still very far below the 99.90% uptime guarantee that is widely claimed by Indonesian hosting provider.

Average Uptime Table in 2020

Based on our research, only four providers succeeded in keeping their servers online above the ideal uptime score (99.90%), while 14 other providers failed.

To be honest, this is not good news for the Indonesian web hosting industry.

1. DomaiNesia (99.93% -6 hours Downtime)

DomaiNesia is the best

cheap hosting in our research. They keep their promise in keeping their servers online with an average uptime score of above 99.90%.

For information, if the average uptime of your website on DomaiNesia is below 99.90%, you can even claim it and get credit as follows:

1. 99.9%: Guaranteed

2. 99.5% - 99.89% : 30% monthly fee
3. 99% - 99.49% : 60% monthly fee
4. < 99% : 100% monthly fee

2. ArdHosting (99.92%

• 4 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 4 hours
• Total downtime: 116x
• Longest downtime: 10 minutes

In an article in the footer of the website ArdHosting (it won't be visible if you don't block the text), they claim their uptime SLA is 99.95%. Unfortunately, based on our monitoring results, the uptime is only 99.92%

Is it bad? No.

99.92% is a good uptime score. Remember that the minimum average uptime that is good in our opinion is 99.90%.

3. Jetorbit (99.90%

• 9 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 9 hours
• Total downtime: 244x
• Longest downtime: 33 minutes
• Website test URL : penasihathosting-jt2.comDiscussionJetorbit is one of four providers that provides an uptime guarantee of only 99% to all its customers.99% is a bad uptime guarantee, because it means your website will experience downtime around 3 days per year. However, in 2020 they performed well with an average uptime that was much better than promised, namely 99.90%.

4. Qwords (Cpanel) (99.88%

• 10 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 10 hours
• Total downtime: 83x
• Longest downtime: 2 hours
• Website test URL : phproject-qw.comDiscussionDo you know how much uptime guarantee Qwords promises? 99.99%. Well, they are a little bolder than Niagahoster (99.98%).

Unfortunately, this courage was not accompanied by strong self-confidence from Qwords.

Why do we say that? Because the uptime guarantee is not accompanied by a credit guarantee that will be given to customers if they fail to achieve the uptime score, as is done by DomaiNesia.

If you want credit or compensation, you have to pay something called hosting insurance of IDR 20,000/month (expensive).

FYI, throughout our journey in reviewing more than 30+ domestic and international hosting, this is the first time we have encountered something called *hosting insurance.

• What we often encounter is that providers will provide free downtime compensation.

5. Indowebsite (99.87%

Is there an uptime guarantee? They don't seem to promise anything even though I found that they mentioned the uptime SLA is 99.90%.

6. Dapur Hosting (99.86%

• 12 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 12 hours

• Longest downtime: 6 hours

Despite the fact that Kitchen Hosting has the best average page load time, it seems like uptime is not one of their strengths.

Even though they promise uptime of 99.90%, our monitoring results say otherwise. They may just not have reached that level yet.

7. IdCloudHost (99.86%

• 12 Hours Downtime)

• Longest downtime: 6 hours

There are 3 providers that promise uptime of 99.99% among the 18 hosting providers that we reviewed and all of them failed to achieve that score, even failed to achieve a good minimum uptime (99.90%).

One of them is IdCloudHost.

Their average uptime is only 99.86%, still far below what they promised. And unfortunately, they also don't promise any compensation if the average uptime obtained is less than 99.99%.

8. Ardetamedia (99.73%

• 13 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 13 hours
• Total downtime: 117x
• Longest downtime: 3 hours

Just like Jetorbit, ArdetaMedia also only guarantees 99% uptime.

A score that according to our research is very easy to achieve. Just imagine, your website must experience downtime of more than 7 hours 18 minutes and 17 seconds every month so that the uptime guarantee can be claimed.

So, we think the 99% uptime guarantee only shows the provider's lack of confidence about the quality of its server uptime.

9. Qwords DirectAdmin (99.72%

• 14 hours Downtime)

• Longest downtime: 2 hours

Qwords has two control panels that you can choose according to your needs, namely cPanel and DirectAdmin. We at Hosting Advisor reviewed both.

From the results of our research, hosting that uses the Direct Admin control panel has lower uptime performance, as well as lower page load time.

They said that this was because there were fewer hosting users in the cPanel package than in the DirectAdmin package.

Exabytes is one of the biggest names in the web hosting industry. They have branches in more than 100 countries from all over the world. However, based on our research, the quality of the Indonesian branch of Exabytes is not as great as its name.

Their average uptime is still far from good, namely only 99.69%.

JogjaHost is still the same company as ArdetaMedia, so it's not surprising that their uptime guarantee is also 99%.

As we said before, a 99% uptime guarantee is very easy to achieve, so there is nothing special here.

2. Host Color (99.55%

However, after I read the SLA (service legal agreement) page, it turned out that the guaranteed uptime was only 99% per month and that was outside of maintenance.

DiscussionDracoola is one of two providers that does not provide an uptime guarantee. Based on our research results, the average uptime throughout 2020 was 99.54%.

Uptime is not one of Dracoola's standout advantages or strengths, but their support service is one of the best in Indonesia.

4. Hostinger (99.49%

The uptime guarantee at Hostinger Indonesia is 99.99%. It looks very convincing, especially if you know that they are one of the big players in the world web hosting industry.

But who would have thought, the uptime record was very bad, namely 99.49% with a number of outages that exceeded the average.

5. Home Hosting (99.46%

DiscussionHome Hosting only guarantees 99% uptime. Prior to this, there were three other providers that provided the same uptime guarantee.99% is not a reassuring uptime guarantee and doesn't seem strong. It's just that you as a customer have to be observant in reading the data.

6. Jagoan Hosting (99.33%

Jagoan Hosting's downtime is among the highest on this list. On average, their servers experience downtime 41 times a month, with the longest downtime being 9 hours.

Not a good indication for a fairly well-known company like Jagoan Hosting.

7. Masterweb (98.25%

• 144 hours Downtime)

• Total downtime: 144 hours
• Total downtime: 1368x
• Longest downtime: 4 hours

Masterweb is in the last position on this list. They don't provide uptime guarantees at all, just like Dracoola, and it turns out their average uptime is the worst in the industry with a score of 98.25% (the only provider with an average below 99%).
