Reseller Hosting

Reseller hosting is a plan that lets you create and sell hosting accounts to clients, usually through WHM and cPanel with quotas for accounts, disk, and bandwidth. You buy resources from an upstream provider and resell them under your own price and brand.

How it works

You buy a reseller plan. In WHM, you create packages with limits for disk, bandwidth, domains, email, and databases. Then you create client accounts and hand over cPanel access. Clients point their domains to your nameservers or the provider's.

Many resellers use private nameservers such as ns1.yourdomain.com for a professional brand. Nameservers still need glue records at the registrar and correct DNS configuration. If you are not ready to manage DNS, use the provider's nameservers.

Calculate the cost

Calculate the reseller plan price, a realistic number of accounts, panel licenses, billing such as WHMCS, domains, payment processing fees, and taxes. Do not forget support time per client and spare capacity for spikes or migrations.

Do not sell every gigabyte of disk as a full package. Leave room for temporary files, email, backups, and growth. Aggressive overselling can make every account slow when one client uses a large share.

Support and security

Clients contact you, not the upstream provider, about email, plugins, or DNS. Use a ticket system so requests do not get lost in private chat.

A compromised account can send spam and damage a shared IP reputation. Isolate risky accounts when possible, monitor updates, and prepare a suspension procedure.

When a client leaves, you need to provide a data export. Understand the legal, privacy, and tax duties too, because you are the one selling the service.

What people miss

“Unlimited” promises still have fair-use limits such as CPU, inode, and entry process. Having no upgrade path also makes growth difficult. Make sure you can move to a VPS or dedicated server without losing clients.

Reseller hosting is built on cPanel and often uses addon domains. Understand shared vs VPS vs dedicated before selling plans.

FAQ

Is reseller hosting suitable for beginners?

It can be, if you are ready to learn the panel, DNS, and support. Without that, clients will feel the poor service quality.

Do I need my own company?

It depends on jurisdiction and scale. For regular sales, consider legal structure, tax, and terms of service from the start.

Can a reseller offer VPS?

Not from a standard cPanel reseller plan. A VPS requires virtualization and a separate operations team, or you can resell a cloud provider's service.
